New California Legislation Goes Into Effect Setting Toughest Nutrition Standards in U.S. Schools

LOS ANGELES, CA, September 1, 2007 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — The California School Junk Food Ban (SB 12, Escutia), setting the most rigorous nutrition standards in the country for food sold on school campuses, went into effect on July 1st. This new legislation establishes limits on fat and sugar content and portion size on all foods sold a la carte, in vending machines or in school stores. In response to this legislation and the rising trends of childhood obesity in America, ORGANIC FOOD BAR, Inc. today announced the nationwide debut of its ORGANIC FOOD BAR Kid’s, the first 100% organic bar for children and the first bar specifically designed to meet SB 12 guidelines. SB 12 is sponsored by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, the California School Boards Association and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“I applaud Governor Schwartzennegger and the great work done by The California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. SB 12 is landmark legislation because it sets a high nutritional standard in our schools at a time when one in three children is overweight in this country,” said Dr. Jack J. Singh, President of ORGANIC FOOD BAR, Inc. “According to the American Obesity Association, the prevalence of childhood obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s. It is unethical to allow this trend to continue. This may be the first generation in history whose life expectancy will be shorter than that of their parents. Getting our children to eat right is more important than ever — and more challenging than ever. ORGANIC FOOD BAR Kid’s contains the highest-quality ingredients and meets the most rigorous nutrition guidelines for schools. They’re pure, and they’re outrageously good. This is the first bar that parents can trust and kids will love!”

ORGANIC FOOD BAR Kid’s contain no refined sugars, hydrogenated oils, preservatives, dairy, high fructose corn syrup, rice syrup, gluten or GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). They come in three flavors: Chocolate Brownie “Keerunch,” Apple Pie “Oooatmeal” and Cherry Pie “Oohmega.” Ingredients include: Organic Cashew Butter, Organic Dates, Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Bio SproutsTM – Flax, Organic Fruits, Organic Cinnamon and “Lots of Love.”

“It’s imperative that people learn the facts,” said Melina Jampolis, MD, one of only 198 double board-certified physicians (internal medicine, physical nutrition) in America. “And, here are the facts: most food products marketed to children contain refined sugars, preservatives and trans fats, which are harmful to kid’s health. Each ingredient in ORGANIC FOOD BAR Kid’s has a purpose, and that is to make your child healthier.” Dr. Jampolis is not affiliated with ORGANIC FOOD BAR, Inc.

ORGANIC FOOD BAR Kid’s may be purchased online at retailers such as VitaminShoppe.com and at grocery stores such as Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Kroger. A portion of all ORGANIC FOOD BAR Kid’s sales benefits local schools in communities across America.
