Remember to Take Care Yourself This Holiday Season

An ORGANIC FOOD BAR Exclusive by Eric Harr

Amidst the dizzying, flurrying bacchanalia of the holidays, we often overlook ourselves.

We can become so wrapped up with wrapping gifts, fixing food and stapling countless strands of twinkle lights to our roofs, that when it’s all over, we slunk into our most comfortable couch and go numb for 36 hours.

The holidays are a time each year to revel in the company of loved ones, appreciate all of tremendous good fortune we have — and to remember that, despite what the news media chooses to report, there is indeed more good in the world than bad. The holidays can, and should, inspire us to be the people we always intended to be: good to ourselves and good to others.

Here are three ways to do that now and into the New Year:

Put a Moratorium on Media

In the past decade, it seems our noisy world has been given a violent shove into deafening. Each day, traffic worsens, pollution rises and the news media assaults our senses and insults our sensibilities with a blitzkrieg of negative images. Human beings are resilient and, without thought, we adapt to these stresses. But, all of those images and reports become a permanent part of our consciousness. While it’s important to stay abreast of the human condition, and to do our part to improve it, we needn’t subject ourselves to an overabundance of news, particularly the graphic coverage on television. Over the next month, turn off the TV. Get any needed news online, and be discriminating. It will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.

Establish One New “Healthy Holiday Family Ritual”

Most of our holiday rituals revolve around food, and we can become a little fixated
on it — and fattened by it. This year, consider creating a new “healthy holiday” family tradition. These outings can boost your health and enjoyment of the holiday season; by fitting in a little physical activity this month, the sumptuous meals can be more fully enjoyed…guilt-free! Here are some ideas: Organize a family, or neighborhood-wide, fun run or walk. Map out a simple and safe course around your neighborhood, draw a start and finish line on the street with some chalk, gather everyone together — and go! Or, your healthy holiday family ritual can be as simple as taking long, lingering pre-meal walks to revel in the crisp weather and the holiday decorations in your neighborhood. The idea here is merely to shift the focus ever so slightly away from shopping and eating to health and togetherness.

Feel Good, Look Good, Do Good

CARE, a leading global humanitarian organization, has launched a new campaign called “The I am Powerful Workout.” This program allows you to gift yourself with better health and wellness as you help fight poverty worldwide. If you need a reason and the motivation to get into shape once and for all, this is it. If you don’t want to pack on the pounds over the holidays and into the New Year, here are three simple steps to take:

  1. Set a health and fitness goal for yourself.
  2. Visit www.care.org/workout to receive a free customized exercise and diet plan and ongoing support all year long.
  3. Just move as little or as much as you want. For every hour of exercise you do, $5 goes to CARE, a leading global humanitarian organization. And through CARE, that $5 goes a long, long way to fighting poverty. Every step you take will help you live your best life — as you help others live theirs.

The holidays are a time to recharge our bodies, refresh our minds, revitalize our most cherished relationships — and renew our faith in humanity, and in one another. Take the time for yourself this holiday season. It can make all the difference.

Lifestyle

ORGANIC FOOD BAR is more than a bar, it’s a lifestyle.

Eating ORGANIC FOOD BARS will enhance your health and help redefine your relationship with food. Understanding how food affects our health and making smarter, more instinctual food choices for yourself and your family each day are two essential steps to living your best life.

We founded ORGANIC FOOD BAR to help you look, feel and live healthier. It’s that simple. It’s why we’ve created the world’s healthiest food bar. It’s why we form partnerships with worthy health organizations here and aboard. It’s why we provide “official energy support” at events each year. It’s why we present the RAISE THE BAR podcast to you each week. And, it’s why we’ve created this “Live the lifestyle” section of the website.

Each week, we will post a new column here with one goal: to help you live your best life. If you have a topic you’d like us to cover, just let us know!
