Angela Pifer

As a nutritionist in private practice and Bastyr University graduate, I look for healthy, tasty and convenient foods for my patients to use as part of their healthy lifestyle plan. My goal is to design a customized nutrition program for each patient I work with. The program is based on a whole food diet. I love showing people that whole foods taste fabulous and that they aren’t missing out on anything by giving up their processed food. In fact, they are always amazed at the difference they feel by eating whole foods. They sleep better, feel more energized and don’t experience the 3 o’clock slump. I focus on consistent eating, with three main meals and two to three snacks each day. I also talk about combing carbs and proteins at each meal or snack (keeps blood sugar stable over the day).

I love the convenience of energy bars, but there are two problems with most bars. One is that most are carbohydrate based, without a healthy blend of fat and protein and the other is taste. I spent a good hour in front of the energy bar section at my local whole foods market, trying bar after bar, until I bit into the Raw Organic cinnamon raisin bar. I thought, “You are kidding me that a bar can taste this good.” I turned the label over and was impressed that it was vegan, wheat free and met the criteria I look for in a bar:

  1. High fiber: at least 2 grams
  2. High protein: at least 3 grams
  3. No high fructose corn syrup
  4. No trans fats or hydrogenated oils
  5. 200 calories for a snack and 400 calories for a meal replacement

In my practice I focus on a couple of specialties: food sensitivities and digestive conditions. Because Raw Organic bars are vegan and wheat free, they fit nicely within this model. Every patient I have mentioned these bars to now buys them by the box. I feel good because my patients love them and because their families are also benefiting from whole foods nutrition. I recommend these to patients for healthy snacks, to use while hiking or right before or after their workout. Energy bars can taste great!
